Open Call for "Membranes"
253 Hoxton Street London N1 5LG United Kingdom |
"Membranes" (18-20 April, 2024) serves as a metaphorical exploration of the porous boundaries between the digital and physical worlds, inspired by the seminal work of renowned author Chi Ta-wei in his book "The Membranes”. This theme invites artists to delve into the intricate interplay between technology, humanity, and the environment, reflecting on the permeable barriers that define our digital existence.
Why "Membranes":
We chose the theme of "Membranes" for its profound relevance in our increasingly interconnected and digitised society. In Chi Ta-wei's visionary novel, "The Membranes" he envisions a future where humanity is enmeshed within digital membranes, blurring the lines between reality and virtuality. This theme offers a rich tapestry of conceptual and aesthetic possibilities, inviting artists to explore themes of connectivity, boundary dissolution, and hybridity in their digital creations.
Who Can Participate:
We welcome submissions from digital artists across all disciplines, including but not limited to digital painting, 3D modelling, generative art, interactive installations, and virtual reality experiences. Artists who embrace innovation, experimentation, and critical inquiry are encouraged to participate, regardless of their level of experience or background.
Key Points for Artists to Consider:
1. Exploring Boundaries: Artists are invited to interrogate the concept of "Membranes" and its implications for our digital lives. How do digital membranes shape our perceptions of reality? How do they mediate our interactions with technology, society, and the environment?
2. Hybridity and Transformation: Artists can explore the notion of hybridity and transformation within digital spaces, blurring the boundaries between the organic and the synthetic, the real and the virtual. How can digital art challenge traditional notions of identity, embodiment, and agency?
3. Climate Change.
Bonus Point: Engagement with Audience: Artists are encouraged to consider how their artworks will engage with viewers, inviting them to participate, interact, and reflect. How can digital art foster meaningful connections and experiences in an increasingly mediated world?

The deadline for artists to submit their proposals is April 12th, midnight London time.
