Are you an artist or an artist team living in the Bay Area?
In partnership with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), SF Parks Alliance will implement a new public asphalt art mural project along Sanchez Slow Street, a bike and pedestrian promenade in the vibrant, Noe Valley residential neighborhood. We’re seeking Bay Area-based artists to submit their qualifications for designing and implementing the asphalt art mural project.

Project Description: The asphalt art mural project will require stakeholder and agency coordination, community engagement, design, planning and installation of a mural directly on the street. The design area will be approximately 1500 square feet and will need to consider street elements. Art designs for chalk art stencils will also be required as part of the scope.

Eligibility: Artists or artist teams who are 18 years of age or older, living and practicing within the nine Bay Area Counties that border the estuaries of San Francisco Bay, San Pablo Bay, and Suisun Bay including: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, Sonoma, and San Francisco. Artists must have successfully painted at least one large-scale public artwork, 700 sq ft or larger, to be considered eligible. Painting experience, especially with asphalt or roadways and associated materials, is highly preferred. Experiences working with diverse communities and in public spaces are also preferred. Artists will be expected to engage with the community throughout the development, design, and implementation of this project.

Funding: The Bloomberg Asphalt Art Initiative grant program is designed to fund visual art interventions on roadways, pedestrian spaces, and public infrastructure with goals of improving street and pedestrian safety, revitalizing and beautifying underutilized public space, and promoting collaboration and civic engagement in local communities. Out of 200 applications, San Francisco was one of 25 cities selected in the recent cohort.
