Description

The Bronx River Art Center (BRAC) invites proposals from Independent Curators for our 2025–2026 Exhibition Season (November 2025 – June 30, 2026).
We welcome proposals for our 800 square foot storefront gallery. We are looking for both solo and group exhibitions that reflect curatorial innovation, community engagement, and a commitment to elevating emerging or underrepresented voices. We especially encourage proposals featuring artists and curators based in the Bronx and New York City. National and international curators are also welcome to apply.

Selected curators will be responsible for:
-Developing a cohesive curatorial proposal
-Sourcing artworks and communicating with artists
-Developing and managing the exhibition concept
-Coordinating with artists and securing artworks
-Writing exhibition texts
-Organizing at least one public program (e.g. talk, workshop, performance)
-Managing & Coordinating exhibit design and installation
-Providing all materials/text for marketing needs
-Must be available and present for installation
-Must be available for opening reception
-Adhering to all deadlines and timelines provided by BRAC

We encourage proposals that align with BRAC’s mission to support artists from underrepresented groups—including women and artists of color—and that explore relevant social, environmental, and community-based issues. We welcome interdisciplinary practices and curatorial approaches that push boundaries and foster dialogue across media and audiences.

BRAC’s Exhibitions Program is recognized for its inventive, community-centered exhibitions that respond to the cultural, economic, and social dynamics of the Bronx. Each exhibition is a platform for experimentation, engagement, and artistic excellence.

Support Provided:
-Installation support
-Promotional postcard design and printing
-Wall text / vinyl decal production
-Publicity and marketing support (Eblasts, Press Release, etc)
-Opening reception
-Closing reception (optional)
-Selected Curators receive a honorarium of $500

Please note that we are unable to provide travel or housing for the curator or artist. BRAC can not cover costs or manage art handling or shipping for work outside of NY State. Please note that we do not accept proposals for solo exhibitions through this curatorial call.

If proposing a group show, curators may include 1-2 of their own work within a larger group showing.

Selection Process:
Selection committee is comprised of NYC based arts professionals representing a wide variety of mediums and backgrounds.

Timeline:
-Applications close June 30th, 2025
-Selection Process July 7th through August 30th 2025
-Semi-Finalist virtual interviews on a rolling basis August & September 2025
-With invites on a rolling basis August through October 2025
